My favorite show on television is a locally-produced show on our public television affiliate WNPT called Tennessee Crossroads. Host Joe Elmore and the TC reporters travel the highways of Tennessee to bring us stories about all manner of food, festivals, artisans, attractions, and the things that make Tennessee uniquely, well, Tennessee.

Often, Tennessee Crossroads will do a story on a restaurant, and one of our favorite things to do is make a road trip to that restaurant. We’ve discovered some great food along the way, and this past weekend may have been the best yet.

Kinfolks Soulfood, BBQ & Catering is located in Smyrna, TN, which is between Nashville and Murfreesboro. Kinfolks got their start in 2013 with a goal to provide good soul food and BBQ in a family setting. They do their grilling and smoking onsite, and you can smell it before you even pull into the parking lot.

On the menu, you can choose from BBQ staples pulled pork, brisket, pulled chicken, wings, and ribs. For some variety, you can also have catfish or whiting fish. These meats (other than the wings) may be ordered as a sandwich or a plate, in which case you add two sides and cornbread. On the last Saturday of the month, Kinfolks features Fried Chicken with sides and banana pudding for dessert. This is important information, because the banana pudding is not offered any other day of the month, apparently.

Sides consist of potato salad, baked beans, mayonnaise-based coleslaw, cabbage, all manner of beans (green, baked, white, but no pinto), mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and french fries, as well as collard greens and turnip greens.

I had a pulled pork plate with baked beans and fries (because they were out of potato salad). The meat had the best smoked flavor of any barbecue I’ve ever had, and the beans had ground beef in them. Fantastic! The fries were so good, we ordered a second basket for everyone to share, including me, since everyone ate my original order of fries.

Our son had the brisket, which he generously shared with me, and it was very good. Again, good smoked flavor, and the meat was tender and juicy.

Everyone was so full, there was no room for dessert, but they sure did look great. Kinfolks has brownies, chess pie, chocolate cake, strawberry cake, and cupcakes of various sorts. Maybe next trip.

And hopefully, that will be soon, because we will definitely be returning to Kinfolks.
