I had heard nothing but good things about Zulema’s Taqueria in Donelson, but I had not visited there until recently. For those of you that know me, this likely shocks you. I mean, we tend to eat out a lot. And we never seem to get our fill of Mexican food.

Well, I’ve been waiting on a time when we could all go as a family, but honestly, that opportunity just never seemed to present itself. So, I went by myself for lunch. I’m very glad I did.

Zulema’s is located in a small building at 104 Graylynn Drive (corner of Lebanon Pike and Graylynn Drive) in Donelson. It’s not very big, as they can only seat about fifteen or so folks inside, but it’s worth a stop…even if you get takeout.

Zulema’s is owned and operated by Zulema and Kurt Rutkowski. Zulema is from Chihuahua, Mexico, and she brings the culture – and recipes – to the table, literally. Kurt brings his culinary flair. The food is not all Mexican, however. There are many Latin/Central American options on the menu, as well.

I ordered the taco special, which is any three tacos plus a side dish for $9. I didn’t think I was that hungry (I was), but that deal was too good to pass up. I chose black beans for my side, and they were excellent, but I’m looking forward to going back and trying their other sides – especially the plantains.

For my three tacos, I chose Nashville Hot Chicken, Discado, and Grilled Mahi Mahi, and I honestly loved all three. The chicken was just hot enough, and it had flavor, which is important. As I’ve discussed on this site previously, hot chicken with no flavor is not your friend. The fish was light and flavorful, but not “fishy”.  No one with multiple children claims to have a favorite, and that’s the way I was with these tacos, but if you forced me to choose, it would have to be the Discado.

A blend of ground beef, ground chorizo, bacon, and smoked chorizo with cabbage, pico, and cotija cheese, the Discado taco was absolutely fantastic. On my next trip, I may have to order 3 Discados. They were that good.

Zulema’s also offers grilled vegetable, carne asada, grilled shrimp, and chicken tacos. No matter your taste, you should be able to find a taco – or three – that suits you.

Tacos not your thing? They also have burritos, the ubiquitous burrito bowl, and nachos. I haven’t had any of these yet, but I can’t wait to go back and try them. Your options for sides include Central American rice, yucca fries, the aforementioned black beans, fried plantains, and refried beans.

Zulema and Kurt have two other locations. Zulema’s Kitchen is located at 555 Marriott Drive, also in the Donelson area of Nashville, and they own and operate Zulema’s Watkins at 2298 Rosa Parks Blvd in Nashville.

If you would like authentic tacos and Mexican food with a distinctive flair, stop in and see them. Tell them Haute Flavor sent you.
